Abi Clarke
In the past,
i.e. In the early 2020s, comedians were expected to be performing for years in
the UK before being invited onto television panels and selling out arena tours.
It's not so easy at the moment. One art form that can be performed live in the
future is comedy, however there won't soon be any arena tour. However, one
Bristol comedian has a huge following via social media lockdown. Abi Clarke did
not set up to become an online celebrity. She is a 24-year-old woman living in Hen
bury, with her parents, started making online videos "to build a following
of people who be interested in my stand-up comic. "I performed a variety
of shows in the depths of Devon to men who were in their 50s and weren't so
enthusiastic about my Love Island, Sims and Twilight references so I went
online with the intention of meeting other young women who were able to relate
to me." Abi has since appeared at Lakota Gardens, as restrictions on
lockdowns have eased however she is still posting her videos on Instagram,
Twitter and Tik Tok (where she recently surpassed the 500,000 mark), finding
the inspiration she needs from sources as diverse as her work in the cafe,
conversations with a stranger or a girls' group chat. She also writes
everything down on her smartphone.
