Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng was born on 21 November 1985. Chieng is currently a Senior Correspondent
for The Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is the creator and the star of the
sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia and
Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an
Malaysian Chinese family. He grew up in both Singapore and the United States,
living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 until 1994. Chieng appeared with
Trevor Noah in 2013 at the comedy festival in Melbourne, Australia. He was then
asked to take on the role of correspondent on Noah's Daily Show two years
after. In July of 2016 Chieng was selected as one of the top 10 comics to watch
by Variety In October 2016, Chieng appeared on The Daily Show to give his
opinion on a Jesse Watters Fox News segment considered racist by many. Chieng
aired an expletive-laden criticism of the segment on Fox News that was deemed
conservative by many. He also visited the city's Chinatown. Watters had mocked
the inhabitants of the area and conducted respectful interviews in Mandarin
Chinese and Cantonese. The viral video received media coverage in the
Washington Post and Slate In his early years, Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout.
Although he has lived in Australia for the past decade, he does not have
citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia. Chieng laughed in 2018
when he said he was cynophobic, but later stated that he is 100 % unafraid of
dogs.
